Treating Your Facial Pain

Have you become resigned to living with facial pain? When pain continues no matter what you do, it's easy to get discouraged. Luckily, facial painhelp is available. Our Pueblo, CO, dentist, Dr. Elmer Villalon, discusses face pain and explains what can be do to treat it.

What causes facial pain?

Chronic facial pain can be caused due to a variety of conditions, such as:

  • Trigger Points: Trigger points are irritated lumps or knots in the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles. If you press on a trigger point, you may notice pain that radiates to other parts of your body.
  • Neuropathic Pain: Neuropathic pain is triggered by an injury to your nervous system. If you have this type of pain, you may experience irritation, aching and burning in your face and mouth or may notice that part of your face feels cold at times.
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia: This condition affects the fifth cranial nerve, which is responsible for sensations in your face. Trigeminal neuralgia can cause sudden, severe pain in your face and neck that aches, burns or feels like electric shocks.
  • Nerve Injuries: Sometimes nerve injuries can occur after tooth extraction or injection of a local anesthetic. If you have an oral nerve injury, you may experience pain and burning and may notice that your lip or mouth feels numb or tingles.
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ): TMJ affects the hinge joints in your jaw and can be very painful. In addition to jaw and facial pain, you may also experience muscle spasms, trouble chewing and headaches.

How is facial pain treated?

Treatments for facial pain depends on the source of your pain. For example, oral appliances can reposition your jaw and reduce pain caused by TMJ. When you visit our Pueblo office, we'll examine your face and mouth, obtain a complete medical and dental history, and recommend a treatment plan that will help ease your pain.
